Install a continuous 6.2 km dedicated bicycle lane along the Abu Dhabi Corniche promenade with high skid resistance and UV-stable red colouring that would not fade under direct coastal sun. The Challenge
Install a continuous 6.2 km dedicated bicycle lane along the Abu Dhabi Corniche promenade with high skid resistance and UV-stable red colouring that would not fade under direct coastal sun. The work had to be done without closing the popular corniche to pedestrians or cyclists outside early-morning windows.
Our Solution
Specified a hot-applied pigmented thermoplastic system with integrated anti-skid calcined bauxite aggregate, laid at 3.0 mm thickness over a tack-coat primer. Red iron-oxide pigment was selected for coastal UV stability and to comply with DoT cycle-lane colour guidance.
Execution
Crews worked 4:00am–7:00am windows seven days a week, applying 6.2 km of red thermoplastic cycle lane with a self-propelled applicator, plus 1.4 km of white segregation edge lines. Glass beads were omitted from the cycle surface to keep skid resistance above 65 BPN, while edge lines received Type II beads for night delineation.
